Danish Teak Chest of Drawers by Johannes Sorth, Nexø Møbelfabrik, 1950s

Designed by Johannes Sorth for Nexø Møbelfabrik in the 1950s, this Danish teak chest of drawers is a particularly well-proportioned example of mid-century cabinet making. The design is defined by its clean, architectural lines, accented by the distinctive “orange slice” handles carved from solid teak. The top two drawers feature internal divisions for organized storage, and comes with its working key.

When this chest arrived from Denmark, the wood was tired and the original finish had faded, leaving the grain looking flat and dull. We have meticulously cleaned and lightly stripped the unit before refinishing it using a traditional French polish. This process is time-intensive but draws out the deep, honey-toned patina of the teak taking the cabinet back to its original condition.

The result is a frame that feels alive and smooth to the touch, with the solid teak edges showing a beautiful, natural contrast against the figured veneers of the drawer fronts. This is a practical, sturdy piece of 1950s design, restored with a focus on longevity and sympathetic character, in an excellent original condition.
