Kaare Klint Safari Chair by Rud Rasmussen

The Safari Chair, designed by Kaare Klint and produced by the celebrated Copenhagen cabinetmaker Rud Rasmussen, is one of the most recognisable and enduring designs of early modern Scandinavian furniture.

Inspired by portable campaign furniture, Klint developed the chair in the early twentieth century as a refined and practical seating solution that could be easily assembled and disassembled without the need for complex joinery. The result is a design that feels both purposeful and elegant, combining clarity of construction with exceptional comfort.

This particular example has a beautifully balanced presence, with a solid oak frame whose warm tone and subtle grain provide a natural contrast to the rich amber colour of the aged leather. The leather upholstery has developed a wonderful depth of patina over time, with tonal variation that only comes with decades of careful use.

The chair has been carefully restored to ensure it remains fit for many years to come. The oak frame has been gently refinished using traditional French polish before being matted down and waxed to produce a soft satin sheen that enhances the character of the timber without appearing overly glossy. The leather has been thoroughly cleaned and nourished, restoring strength and suppleness while preserving its natural surface and historic wear.

Elegant, practical and exceptionally comfortable, the Safari Chair remains one of the defining achievements of early Danish modern design.
