Hans Wegner Chest of Drawers by Ry Mobler, Denmark, 1950s
A chest of drawers designed by Hans Wegner and produced by Ry Mobler in Denmark in the 1950s. An early piece, with a slightly more architectural feel than his later work. The mix of oak and teak gives it a strong balance, with solid teak drawer pulls as a simple, well-designed detail.
Sourced in Denmark, the piece arrived looking tired and worn. It has been carefully cleaned, lightly stripped and sanded, then French polished, matted back, and finished with a wax polish. This brings out the warmth in the teak and the softer tone of the oak, while keeping the original surface character and patina that has built up over time.
The drawer layout is well judged, with a mix of sizes that breaks up the front and makes it practical to use. The solid end panels and the oak base detail with visible pegging give it a sense of structure, while the overall form remains quite light.
Fully restored and ready for use, a good, usable example of early Danish mid-century cabinetmaking.
